TEMECULA: Christian dance company to host event
Free lessons, information on various support groups to be offered
By The Californian | Saturday, March 14, 2009 6:07
TEMECULA —- Now more than ever, people need a boost, said Nicole Thomas, owner of Dunamix Dance Classes, a Christian-based dance company.
With the economy in the dumps and people losing their homes and scraping together money just to buy food, Thomas said she and her friends wanted to offer the community help and a way to cheer them up.
To that end, Thomas developed an outreach event, “Free Dance Day,” that will combine free dance lessons with information gathered from churches across the region about where families can go, and groups they can turn to, for a variety of help and services, she said.
The daylong event is slated for Saturday in the dance studio at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater, 42051 Main St.
“I think everybody just feels like this is something they want to do,” Thomas said. “With the way the economy is, all of us have had friends who have lost their homes and jobs. People can’t afford dance like they used to. We love what we do, and we are excited to give these gifts to the community. These are qualified teachers —- it’s not a rinky-dink thing at all.”
For example, one of the instructors will be George Ortiz, who danced in the Ricky Martin World Tour La Vida Loca, in Michael Jackson videos, and in a variety of commercials and television appearances, she said.
The day will include two ballet lessons, one for ages 4 through 8 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and the other for ages 9 and up from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
The other classes are meant for those at least 8 years and older, Thomas said, adding that she hopes people from teens to those in their 40s and 50s sign up.
A hip-hop class is set for 10:30 a.m. to noon, a jazz class from noon to 1:30 p.m., and a stomp rhythm class is scheduled from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The classes are capped at 30 students each, Thomas said. Register to (951) 600-2692. Thomas is also looking for more outreach information to offer at the event, and is asking officials from local support groups to call her too.

Hello! Free Dance day has been rescheduled to Jan. 8th. Thank you.
